HaU BLOG Posts
This past spring break I did very little sleeping and a lot of traveling! I spent the first four days in Mexico, where I celebrated my grandpa’s 103rd birthday! It is always so beautiful to me to be able to spend time with him and be with him and my family on his special day. I loved every second of those four days. After landing in TJ, I quickly drove to LA to catch another plane to Seattle with my roommates/Hermanas. We spent the next four days exploring the city and taking too many pictures! It was nice to experience a different place with people who mean so much to me. I thank HaU for the friendships I have made, and I hope my Hermana memories/adventures never end. <3 LOVE YOU ALL!
As my time at UCLA wraps up, I will keep all the memories deeply buried in my heart
I will remember the times you opened doors for me The first time you made me feel safe, you made me realize I belonged I heared all the brown faces that spoke in my same tongue I didn't have to translate my spirit, for you understood my past When I told you I was undocumented, you smiled When I cried because I was homesick, you offered me a new home You never meant to replace my old one but knew that I needed a lil extra support You texted me to invite me to events and made me socialize when I wasn't feeling my best. I will never forget that you always remembered my name. When I thought I was invisible on this campus, you saw me on bwalk and said my name "Isabel" you delicately pronounced my name in its original form- en espanol it reminded me of chilaquiles and the smell of dirt, mi pueblito hermoso que llevo en el corazon Desde ese momento, supe que tu eras para mi Thank you Hermanas Unidas de UCLA, my success is yours In two months, I will walk that stage and when I do, please remember that you are walking next to me For all the girls that couldn't walk, I walk for you For my friend, who decided he was too pure to roam this cruel world, I walk for you For all our parents who gave up on their dreams to cross the border but continue to tell us there's no limit to our dreams, I walk for you For me, the little girl who teared up during 3rd grade recess because no one liked her accent, for you I walk. I give you my tears, sweat and spirit. This is your time to shine. I love you I learned a lot from my years here at UCLA. One of the biggest things that has helped me throughout has definitely been my Hermanas. This year especially has been very tough for me especially being a senior, making sure I graduate has been a real struggle. I have fought so hard to stay at this university and I will not let anyone keep me from graduating this year. It has been very tough and I am ready to definitely be done with this institution but I will definitely miss going to Monday meetings, hanging out, studying, helping the community with my Hermanas. It definitely has been a long journey but I am so thankful to have HaU. This year being on steering has been bitter sweet, it was hard but it was definitely worth all the hard work that we put in to see all of the outcomes has been very rewarding. I really want to thank my steering for all of the hard work they have put in everyone has put in so much love and effort through all of our thorns. I want to thank everyone of my Hermanas all of you are in my heart and I love and cherish each and every one of you. I feel so honored to have been a part of your steering this year and I really hope you have enjoyed everything. I definitely enjoyed all the tears and the laughs. I wish everyone nothing but the best and please always stay in touch. Los quiero mucho. -11 Honestly, spring break was way too short! But I made the best of it and made some great memories with my friends and family. I went to Mexico for a couple of days to visit my family and go to my aunts wedding in Chipilo, Puebla. I hadn’t seen my family from my moms side since like 2 years ago so when I found out about the wedding I was super excited! It was interesting because the people from Chipilo are of Italian descent and my aunt’s husband is from there so now we have some Italians added to our family. Even though this town is in Mexico I saw how they keep their Italian traditions alive and was able to experience some of it. Aside from that, I got to spend time with my cousins and we went on a trip to el centro de Puebla during the night to a café where they had live music and good vibes. I felt like this is what I needed after having such a stressful quarter at school. The next day the whole family and I went around Puebla visiting it’s historical and popular places before my sister and I left back to the U.S. and come back to reality. I had a few more days of break left so I spent time with my best friends after not seeing them since winter break. It felt so great just going out to eat, chilling at their house, and going out to bars with them. I’m sad I probably won’t see them until after spring quarter ends but I love how we still have these strong friendships no matter how long we go without seeing or talking to each other. I think my most favorite part of break was being with my parents, sister, and dogs though. Everyday I miss them while I’m away at school but I know they’re always supporting me and are one call away whenever I need them.
