Nope, Hermanas Unidas is not a sorority. Hermanas Unidas is non-profit organization that focuses on hermandad among womxn who are determined to make the journey of college easier for all of us. We focus on academics, community service, and social networking of college life to make our Hermanas holistic and functioning members of society. It is our goal to see everyone graduate and prosper.
How do I join?
Just attend one of our Monday meetings from 6-7 PM! Once you attend your first meeting, you will become part of the org. And as we say, once an Hermana ALWAYS an Hermana 💙
Is Hermanas Unidas the girl version of Hermanos?
No, Hermanas Unidas was founded independently from any other pre-existing organizations. We have our own mission, pillars, and values and as an open door organization aim to create an inclusive environment. Do I have to pay dues to be a part of HaU?
Nope, dues are NOT mandatory. Although we do encourage Hermanas to pay dues, they are never mandatory to be part of HaU. Dues are simply used to help fund our events throughout the year. If you do decide to pay dues, you will receive priority rides to events, do not have to pay for retreats, and get discounts on our gear!
What does it mean to be an active member?
To be active, you must complete 24 community service and 30 academic hours throughout the entire academic year. The way you can complete these hours is through the different activities and events the Community Service Chair and the Academic Chair put together, which can vary each quarter! If you are active, you are allowed to vote and run for a steering position for the following academic year.
How do I earn academic hours? How can I earn community service hours?
There are many different ways to earn both!
Academic opportunities:
Throughout the week, hermanas host study hours at different libraries where you can sign in with them for however long you are there. You must make sure to sign in and sign out with that person, or you will not get the hours :(
There are Study-A-Thons throughout the quarter where lots of hermanas will go to a library right after meeting- typically from 7pm to 11pm!
If libraries are not your favorite place to study, you can also earn official academic hours through museum visits, workshops, or other events our Academic Chair hosts (so make sure to look out for that!).
You can also earn unofficial study hours when you & a group of 3 or more hermanas study together; all you have to do is make a sign in sheet and send it to [email protected]!
Community Service opportunities:
Throughout the year we give many tours and panels with different schools & grade levels that visit our campus.
Each quarter, we also have specific community service events on the weekends that take place every year (AIDS Walk, Compton Initiative, BruinHope Collab, etc.) that allow you to get a huge chunk of your community service hours.
We also understand that you may not always be able to attend these events, which is why you may earn unofficial community service hours by donating to the SAC Food Closet, donating to the HaU Business closet, donating blood, or doing your own community service with 3 or more hermanas (with the approval of the Community Service Chair)!
Do I have to go to Monday meetings in order to be in Hermanas Unidas?
No! We recognize that all of our hermanas are students first and may not be able to attend our meetings every week. Therefore, we welcome all girls to come to any of our events throughout the year. If you are ever wondering when events are happening or where they may be at, be sure to subscribe to our email list or check our instagram story regularly!
