Hello my lovely hermanas.
I am a 2013 alumna and currently in my first year of dental school at UCSF. I was asked to share a story, advice, or challenge I've faced. One thing I want to share with you is the fact that for so many years, I struggled with accepting the obstacles that were thrown at me. I compared my journey to those of my friends and classmates. I decided I wanted to become a dentist during my 2nd year and immediately began adding multiple activities to my resume. I constantly doubted my ability to succeed because I struggled academically all 4 years at UCLA. During my 4th year I realized I was not competitive enough for dental school so I applied to a post-bacc. I did not gain acceptance and this brought me down even more. I was graduating with no possibility of dental school, and no job lined up. I ended up applying for a post-bacc again and fortunately got in, but during that time I kept comparing myself with friends who were at a great career job, buying cars, living on their own or buying their first home. I would complain at the fact that I wouldn’t reach dental school until 3 years after graduating. That bothered me so much and it took a toll on me during those gap years. But when it came time to apply to dental school, I realized that I needed those 3 years! I learned so much about myself, my career goals, and what I valued in life. I realized the rejections, delays, and stress were blessings in disguise. I accepted that fact that I have my own path and should never compare it to others. I will get to where I need to be at my own pace and when it is right for me. My advice to you ladies is to not give up on your goals. Things don’t always go as planned and there will be obstacles, but just pause, breathe, and take them one at a time. With passion and perseverance, you’ll get to where you want to be- at your own pace! And remember that you don’t have to do it alone. Find people who support you and you will realize that we all need a little push in our journey to success. May you all find your passion and enjoy the time you have left at UCLA. P.S. Reach out to alumni! We are here for you. Much HaU love, Rosangel Oropeza
